Sussex Tollgates - Vintage Bald Exploper
Sussex Toll gates have now disappeared from the roads. In this vintage episode, the Bald Explorer explores the remaining toll gates of Sussex. Join the adventures of the Bald Explorer as he discovers Britain
Before the Turnpike Trusts of the 17th century the roads were dreadful, barely more than simple tracks. When the tolls came into being things took a lot longer to improve. Richard Vobes goes off in this short documentary to find some of the Sussex Toll Houses that once graced the roads and were responsible for collecting the money to improve the roads.

The adventures of the Bald Explorer as he discovers Britain. This film was made in 2010, prior to the Bald Explorer series, an early Baldy. In it, I am all blown up on steroids after an eye removal operation. You can see how fat faced the medication made me. The dark glasses are there to protect the eye socket at this tender time. That said, I still managed to get out and explore the Sussex cou...
The Bald Explorer meets John Marshall painter of cows

This off-the-cuff statement changed his career and nowadays John ca...

His father Roger is in a very long text pedigree of a great uncle Jones of mine. Been outlining the Jones family across four books for eight years now. Every great grandparent were aristocrats, so Humphrey, and Mad Jack are quite colorful characters to look into. Hoping to publish Volume II soon. Humphrey/Kynastons are mentioned on Page 20 in “The Kynaston Family,” Transactions of the Shropshire Archæological and Natural History Society, 2nd series, 6 (1) (1894)

Thanks, Richjard, for telling us the history of this interesting little place. In Anglican mythology (I'm CofE myself) a dedication to St Michael and All Angels can have some very odd implications - often it suggests that the building is on a former pagan worship site which has been taken over or, particularly if the church had a previous title and was rededicated to St Michael, that at some point it had been violated, possibly through witchcraft. Presumably, in this case, the former is the more likely?

PS - would you believe there's a paranormal investigation site with a trip to Bedham Church? I've just noticed it. Although it may support my theory, I won't waste my time on it! Your film's more believable.

I think that The Landmark Trust could turn the Racton Tower into a useful building, while maintaining its individuality & providing spots from which it can be veiwed externally as well as maybe allowing entry to maybe part of it once a year, or something.

Mary was a dark and deviant Queen, an fanatical Roman Catholic Pyromaniac, who hated Protestants, and feared the freedom that the Gospel of Christ brought to the ordinary people of England and beyond. ‘Faith in Christ Alone’ and not tradition or a controlled church system. Thank goodness for her half sister Queen Elizabeth the First, who continued the Protestant Reformation. We will not for get the faithful 17 believers, who were burned for their faith in Lewes. Thank you for the brilliant overview and the visit to Lewes.

Love this old video. The music is very Fred Dibnah-esque. I'll never forget my first visit and it's a reason to be spooky! With some friends, we wanted to go but decided to go the following night instead. Probably just as well, as on the original night we planned to go, there was a suicide as evidenced by the fresh flowers and rope still in situ in the left small tower. Hence, some of the RIP graffiti. I've been several times since, but never in daylight!

It's a woman. Can it be any more obvious? This is a naked human figure - no costume or headdress is visible. There's no male appendage, so it's female. The posts, or stakes are either side of her and she's holding on to them for support and is about to give birth. In ancient and primitive tribes this would have been the preferred method, using gravity to deliver a 6-8 ibs, 3-4 kg baby. No woman would lie down like an invalid for that reason. Child birth would have been one of the most awesome, magical and mysterious events in the ancient world. This hill figure shows just how important and significant it was. Some have speculated the staves are some kind of portal - indeed they are - the entry from the Spirit world to the world of Man.

i love cows and refuse to eat them. they are ALL slaughtered very young. a cow should live for 20+ years but all cows are slaughtered between 9-18 months old with a few eception for steer- they get to live for 2 years.
